Psyllium is more often known under the name of Plantain of India or Ispaghul. It is an Indian plant used in ayurvedic medicine for the Relief of numerous disorders the body's transit system.

It has the advantage of helping to retain water contained in stools: it thus improves their transit, and allows to give some consistency. It is also one of the best laxative because it has no secondary effects.

The maximum intake for an adult is no more than 30 grammes per day - or 3 soup spoonfulls. Chirldren of 6 to 12 years may take only half that quantity. For younger children and infants half a tea spoon full is suggested. Always start on a low intake. Mix the quantity required with water and drink immediately at least 1 hour before eating.
For long term problems of constipation psyllium may be mixed into food taken regularly, such as soup, a cake or yoghurt.
