Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is a source of mucilage, which supports mucous membranes, and is often used to soothe the digestive tract.
Our slippery elm capsules contain only slippery elm bark. The bark is pure and no additives have been used. If necessary, the contents can be removed from the capsule and mixed with a little water, ideal for people who have difficulty swallowing capsules.
Native Americans have always used the inner bark (the bast) of this tree to treat sore throats, coughs, irritations of the digestive tract and various wounds or skin inflammations. They transmitted these uses to European settlers who quickly adopted them. During the American Civil War, military surgeons made extensive use of slippery elm bark poultices to treat soldiers' wounds.
From 1820 to 1960, slippery elm bast was part of the official pharmacopoeia of the United States as an emollient, mucous softener and cough suppressant.
