This mushroom is mainly used in mycotherapy.

Hericium or “hedgehog hydne” is commonly used in Chinese tradition to support the body in maintaining all cerebral and cognitive capacities for a long time. It is cited in the “Compendium of materia medica” (Shen Norg Ben Cao Jin, work of Chinese medicine) from the Han dynasty (200-100 BC), and recommended from that time to relieve stomach aches, as a restorative, to delay aging and maintain good memory. Today, its properties have been confirmed by researchers and several scientific studies have identified various very active substances, some of which have very significant therapeutic potential, particularly for nerve repair and memory, and gastritis.

Phenolic derivatives, called erinacins (isolated from the mycelium) and hericenones (isolated from the fruiting body), trigger the synthesis of N.G.F. in humans. (Neural Growth Factor). HEF-P polysaccharides (beta-glucans), Arabinitol D and D-Threitol, Palmitic acid (saturated fatty acid), Hericenones A and C-H, Erinacins A-K, Orcinol derivatives.
