Scots pine bud capsules to easily benefit from the virtues and properties of its essential oil.
The Scots pine, also known as Pinus sylvestris, belongs to the Pinaceae family, like its cousins the fir and the spruce.
It is one of the most common coniferous pines in Europe and is easily recognizable by its straight, slender trunk with reddish bark. Like its relatives, it does not have leaves but evergreen needles, meaning they only fall every 3 to 6 years. These needles are soft and pointed, initially green, then turn a bluish-gray. The Scots pine can reach 40 to 50 meters in height and live for 200 to 300 years, although in rare cases, it can live for more than 600 years.
The Scots pine thrives in harsh climates, withstanding arid conditions down to -50 degrees Celsius and significant temperature variations, and requiring few resources to survive and grow. It is found naturally in the Alps, the Vosges Mountains, and the Pyrenees up to an altitude of 1600 meters. In fact, the first Scots pine was planted in the Corrèze region of France in the 19th century.
It is also well-known for its hardiness and is used for railway sleepers, by shipwrights, and in papermaking. Herbalists also use the pine and its buds for their active ingredients and beneficial properties.
The Scots pine produces buds at the tips of its branches twice a year: in March after winter and again in September after summer. It is during these two periods that the pine bud is richest in essential oil. It is also thanks to its essential oil content that the pine bud owes its pleasant, characteristic scent, which can be experienced during a walk in pine forests. It is also its essential oil content that gives the pine bud all its virtues and properties.
